✍🏼 A Terrible Haiku, From Me to You ✍🏼

It's the end of National Poetry Month, let's squeeze in a bad poem + a meme or two

(What is this? An occasional newsletter that's 80% good news, 20% weird stuff, 100% interesting.)

What’s up suckers 👋🏽

It’s the end of April, and lately I’ve noticed that I need to wear 😎 sunglasses IN THE EVENING (‼️) and with this revelation is the feeling that life is suddenly BETTER? Ah, the power the sun and weather have over us, right?! 🌞🌞🌞 We are nothing but complicated plants, aren’t we.

Before April ends, I wanted to point out that it’s 📖 National Poetry Month, celebrated in the US and Canada each year. I really like this random fact because I 💕LOVE 💕 to read, especially fiction and poetry. So I wrote a stupid haiku for y’all:

Writing Mostly Good

I sit back and realize

Wow I like weird things

🎉 Ta-da!! Now that’s out of the way, let’s get on to the good/weird stuff!! In this edition we talk about the history of poetry (duh) and some random good news happening around the world lately. 🗺️💖

Let’s go! 🏃🏿‍♀️🏃🏿‍♀️ (← I wish she was running from left to right, indicating a forward momentum, but alas.)

What’s Good and New

🐼 Giant Pandas are officially off the endangered species list! According to the World Wildlife Fund, Giant Panda populations have increased by 17% over the last decade, pushing their status down to “vulnerable” on the extinction list. There’s still a lot of work to do though, we only have approximately 2000 Giant Pandas on earth (this is so alarming to me). Hoping to see that number increase over the next decade!

🙅🏾🛍️ Bans on plastic bags have successfully reduced plastic litter in shoreline cleanups by up to 47%. And on top of that, the bans have resulted in a 37% decrease of wildlife getting caught in plastic in lakes and oceans! Now let’s do something about all the plastic cups and containers we use to package food in…

🥑 🍅 Did you know that since 2016, France has banned supermarkets from throwing away unsold food? This attempt at managing food waste benefits local charities and organizations that could use the free food. In the past 10 years, this ban has resulted in 10 million donated meals, which is absolutely fantastic. Will other countries follow suit?

🛀🏽 New research suggests that taking a warm bath has more health benefits than sitting in a sauna. Well, this is going to be a very regular part of my cardiovascular fitness routine! Baths are so much better than saunas IMO. I hate the feeling of breathing in hot air as thick as yogurt while I sit on a wooden bench soaked in my own sweat (or worse - SOMEONE ELSE’S SWEAT 🤢). I absolutely love zoning out in a hot bath, especially after a really long day. Get to bathing everyone! Your heart will thank you. 🫀

Meme of the Week

I can’t imagine what ChatGPT is doing to English teachers these days

We are all accidental poets sometimes

Weird Factoids of The Week

  • ✍🏼  Haikus were short poems originated in Japan in the 17th century, and originally it was mandatory to include a seasonal reference somewhere in your haiku. Interesting rule! My haiku above would’ve been yeeted out the window (do the young people still say “yeet”?)

  • 🗣️ I really love this fact: Poetry is the oldest form of literature, predating books and other written language. Poems were shared as spoken word, musicals, and memorized stories. sigh 💌 What a romantic piece of history!

  • 👀 Apparently Shakespeare created the words “eyeball” and “swagger”! What were eyeballs called before Shakespeare?!

  • 🌌 A galactic year is how long the sun takes to traverse the galaxy. So when you do the math, that means the sun is only 20.5 years old!

  • 🌷 OK this one is bothering me: Tulip bulbs can be a substitute for onions in any recipe. Please for the love of mankind someone try this and report back to me (I will not be that person)

That’s It, That’s All

Ok that’s it for now, my fellow goodies ❤️‍🔥. Hope this week brings you lots of sunshine 🌤️! Take a hot bath 🛀🏽, start to re-introduce daily sunscreen🧴 into your routine, and don’t forget to drink water 🥤!!

Have the best week ever,

🤟🏽 Steph
