What’s Good and New

🇸🇪 There’s an entire mall in Eskilstuna, Sweden dedicated to selling ONLY 🧥👜🥾 thrifted clothes, second hand items, or products made from organic, sustainable, or used materials. Honestly such a slay. Called ReTuna Återbruksgalleria, the mall opened in 2015 and has sold 💰 millions of dollars worth of recycled/repurposed goods since it’s opening. How incredible is this concept? If I lived near a second-hand mall, I’d almost exclusively shop there! 🫶 I love this idea so much and would love to see something like this in urban centres around the world.

🇫🇷 This year, France passed a bill that ❌ bans any fast fashion brands from advertising online, and requires fast fashion brands to disclose key environmental information for each product (recyclability, carbon emissions, etc.). 👗 This is a bold attempt at slowing the pace at which fast fashion is purchased and discarded (France disposes 35 articles of clothing every second). Sure we all know by now that buying from Shein and Temu is cheap and fast, but have we stopped to think of what our ultra fast fashion purchases are doing to our environment? 🍃🌍💚 As fast fashion clothes become literally disposable, our landfills are overflowing and the plastics in these super cheap clothes are wreaking havoc on our environment. Time to slow down and rethink buying the next trend we see on our TikTok feeds, am I right? 🤔🤔

💖 As someone who’s loved thrifting since earning my first paycheque at the age of 16, I think thrifting is an adventure every time! Nowadays, it’s become cool to thrift (this was definitely not the case when I was 16 and wearing clothes from the 70s thrifted at the local Salvation Army.) 👜🤎👡 Thrifting is now seen as a lifestyle among Gen Z, for a few reasons. It’s more affordable, and it’s sustainable too. Thrifting is almost trendy in itself, which is interesting. It’s a rebellion against the fast fashion world, it’s a statement on living ethically and consciously. ♻️ Whatever, I’m just happy that the trendy kids are keeping clothes out of landfills, and not relying on fast fashion for every purchase!

Weird Factoids of The Week

• ⚉ 🪡 ‍ Did you know that buttons were invented 3500 years before the button hole?! WTF? Apparently people used to use loops of thread for every button. And then some random genius invents a hole for his button one day? I am baffled at this fact.

• 🤏👗 The Mini Skirt was named after the Mini Cooper car 🚘. I know, I don’t get it either.

• 🥾The first pairs of Doc Marten boots were made out of old rubber tires 🛞. Talk about  sustainability! 

• 💩🚽  A 2016 survey of 1000 people found that 22% of them did their holiday shopping while on the toilet. LOL gross, but I’m not surprised by this fact. I hope they sanitize their phones regularly 🧼 Do you sanitize your phone regularly?! I do, and so should you!

• 🎁 🚫 Did you know that glossy, metallic, or plastic gift wrapping cannot be recycled?! 😳 This year, maybe consider using 100% paper-based wrapping to package your holiday gifts, or use 📰 newspaper and twine (this could look really chic). For small items, try packaging gifts with thrifted handkerchiefs and ribbons!
